Abstract

This study was intended to investigate the critical reading levels of the 5
th
class students according to gender
differences and educational background of their family. A total of 185 5
th
grade students who were chosen randomly from the
students of primary schools in Bursa were participated in the study. This was regarded as a descriptive study. Data was
collected by a critical reading scale which determines the critical reading skills of students developed by Ünal (2006).
Significance of the difference between genders and family educational background was examined with t-test and One-Way
Anova test. According to the results of the study, critical reading skills of students haven’t increased with the family
educational background but there is a meaningful difference between genders in favor of the girls
