The Role of Science Teacher in Constructivist Theory

Abstract

According to constructivist theory, when students are learning knowledge about science, they interpret any new information in the light of existing ideas, beliefs and experiences. In this theory, every person is responsible for her/his own learning. This theory is still the dominant paradigm of learning science. The major role of the science teacher in this theory is to create learning climate help students reach knowledge easily and make sense of it. In this article, constructivist theory has been discussed and the samples on the role of science teacher in this theory have been given from some studies concerning this theory. When it is taken into account
that the primary science curriculums in 2000 and 2004 years in Turkey are under the influence of constructivist theory, this article aims at giving a new perspective both for science teachers and other all course teachers in their learning and teaching activities.
