The Relation Between Tendency To Violence And The Level Of School Engagement

Abstract

The purpose of the present study is to determine the relationship between the middle-school students’ tendency to violence and their levels of engagement to school. Whether students’ tendency to violence and their levels of engagement to school differentiated or not will be analyzed according to gender, number of siblings, level of class, monthly income of families. The relational screening and causal comparison methods were used in the study. Sample consisted of 197 female and 203 male, 400 students in total. The Scale of Tendency to Violence and Student Engagement Instrument were used. Results indicated that the students’ level of tendency to violence was determined to be increasing as their level of engagement to school decreases. In addition, the level of tendency to violence was determined to be higher in male students compared to female students. The level of engagement to school was found to be higher in female students compared to male students. The 8th graders were seen to be more prone to violence than the 5th, 6th and 7th graders. Besides, the level of engagement to school of the 8th graders was found to be lower than the 5th and 6th graders.
