Abstract

The aim of this study is to find out the teachers’ views about retirement, their needs in the postretirement process and readiness levels for retirement and also to determine their opinions about pre-retirement
training programme. Twenty-two teachers who are near retirement or entitled to retirement, but not retired,
participated in this study. Data were obtained by a semi-structured interview form. In data analysis process,
content analysis method was used. Results showed that some teachers perceive retirement as an opportunity and
a new start, but some others consider it as an end in their lives. Most teachers have no plans for retirement.
Teachers who have plans are planning to spend more time with their family, to set up a business, or to take part
in social projects. Economic needs are the most important ones in the post-retiremet period. Most teachers like
the idea of pre-retirement training programme and are willing to participate it.
