Primary Teachers’ Opinions about the Difficulties Encountered in the Application of the Basic Reading and Writing Curriculum

Abstract

The aim of the study is to investigate teachers’ opinions regarding the difficulties they encountered in the application of the basic reading and writing curriculum. The research was carried out in 17 teachers who teach first grade level in Bolu city center in 2010-2011 educational year. The research is based on a qualitative data analysis. In the study open-ended survey scales were developed to determine the teachers’ opinions about the basic reading and writing curriculum. It was concluded that the teachers encountered
difficulties in terms of reaching the attainments, content, phonics based sentence method, evaluation methods, teaching cursive script, parents, training inspectors, school administrators during the application of the curriculum. It was recommended that more research needs to be conducted about application of attainments, content, evaluation methods, phonics based sentence method in order to minimize difficulties encountered. In addition, seminars about basic reading and writing curriculum and its instruction need to be organized with the inspectors, parents and teachers.
