Relationship between Loneliness and Perceived Social Support of Teachers in the Workplace

Abstract

The aim of the study is to determine the relationship between loneliness and perceived social support of teachers in the workplace. The study group consists of 170 primary school teachers, who participated in the study on a voluntary basis, from the city of Samsun, Turkey. To determine teachers' loneliness levels in the workplace 'Loneliness Scale in Workplace' is used. There is a significant and positive relationship between loneliness and social support at workplace. According to results of the study teachers perceive low levels of loneliness and social support in workplace. There is no difference in this relationship with regards to subject area but the difference is significant in terms of years of service. Teachers with more than 10 years of seniority had higher levels of loneliness at work.
