Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine multiple variables that affect reading skills through a comparison of reading habits between students with and without hearing impairment and reading motivations. The resarch was designed in relational survey pattern. The sample has 40 students with hearing impairments and 40 students without hearing impairments. In order to determine the reading motivation of students, this study uses the scale developed by Wigfield and Guthrie (1997) and remodeled by Guthire and Wang (2004)
with two factors in internal and extrinsic motivation, as used by Yildiz (2010). The data was analyzed with SPSS 24 statistical software. Results indicated that the motivation of students with hearing impairment was significantly higher than the students with hearing impairment and that the motivation of reading for female students was significantly higher than the students with hearing impairment and the students with and without hearing impairment. In addition, there was also a significant relationship between extrinsic motivation of students and achievement.
